Sleep In Elderly
Many older people have particular difficulties with getting a consistent good night's sleep. Using medications for this has several drawbacks. Firstly, as people get older, the likelihood that a person will be prescribed medications increases significantly. Medication interactions are a particular concern for the elderly since our systems become less able to process the medications as we get older. In addition, many older people are not reliable with medications leaving them at risk of taking multiple doses or not getting the medication as prescribed.
A major cause of sleep problems in the elderly is an accelerated circadian rhythm resulting in becoming confused and/or falling asleep early, then awakening very early (3 or 4 AM) in the morning. Proper use of LT can adjust this simply for most people. Click here to review one relevant study.
